Who's keeping the count

Dale Brooks at the table in his den
At the table in my den, up north.
"I did twenty-six years in the Army, and I run my house the way the Army plans a unit: per person, per day, from the published numbers, with ninety days on hand; out here the ambulance is forty minutes away, so everything in these books I've counted, bought and tested at my own place."

My daughters asked me to write down how the place runs. Deb said a notebook was wasted on two people. So it's three books, with the arithmetic done, and a pencil's all you need to make it yours.

Why you can trust the numbers

Every number has a source

Every figure comes from a published document: the Army's own field manuals and regulations, the National Weather Service, the Red Cross, the extension service. Each one is named, with its year, in the sourcing sheet at the back of the book.

Receipts from one house

Every price is what I paid at the hardware store, the farm store or the grocery in town, and roughly when. Then it's worked out for your house, per person, per day. One house and two people is the limit of what I know, and the books say so.

The lines it won't cross

No weapon of any kind. Nothing that burns indoors, and the generator stays outside. No wiring: anything tied to the house is the licensed electrician's job. No first aid taught, and no canning outside a tested published method. And 30 days, money back, keep the files.

Frequently asked questions

Which one do I start with?

The Prepper's Field Manual. It's the whole count: water, food, power, heat, fuel, the kit and the plan. The other two are one job each. If it's the power that worries you, When the Grid Goes Down. If it's the cold, When the Cold Comes. If you'd rather have it all on the shelf, all three are $37.

What am I actually getting?

PDFs, 8.5 by 11, in big plain type. You pay once, and in about a minute there's an email with the download. Read them on a phone, a tablet or a computer, or print them at home. The cards at the end of the chapters are made to print, fill in with a pencil and pin up.

I was never in the Army. Will I follow it?

Yes. The Army's figures are published documents anybody can read. I read them and turned them into a house's count, per person, per day. You don't need to have served. You need a pencil and a weekend.

I don't live in the woods. Is this for me?

The numbers are per person, per day, so they work in a house in town the same as out here. My woodshed and my well are mine. Your water, your food, your power and your plan are the same count.

Will the power book have me wiring my own panel?

No. There's no wiring in it and no electrical repair. Anything that ties a generator or a battery to your house is a licensed electrician's job, with a permit and an inspection. The book tells you what to ask him, and the generator always runs outside.

Is there anything in here about guns?

No. Not one, of any kind. I did my twenty-six years, and that's not what these books are for. Your job is to be the house that's too much trouble, and then to call the sheriff.

What if it's not for me?

30 days, full refund, no questions. Reply to the email the books came in and you get your money back. Keep the files.

Is any of this medical advice, or the order to leave?

No. I own the kit and I took the class. What to do with it is theirs to teach. Go take the class. Your county and the National Weather Service give the orders, and they come first. When they say leave, you leave.

The storm doesn't care what you meant to do. Do the count while the lights are on.

Out here, you're the first forty minutes. Wherever you live, help is some distance off, and your house carries it until they get there. Pick one thing this week and count it, per person, per day. The books have the numbers worked out.
